Colonial times come to life at this impeccably restored historic home.

by Contributor

The Scene
This stately, three-story home was built in 1763 by John Rutledge, a South Carolina statesman and one of the 55 signers of the U.S. Constitution. The home is steeped in American history: President George Washington was said to have paid a visit in 1791. Many of the home's architectural features--Italian marble fireplaces, inlaid wood floors, plaster moldings--have been restored to their original beauty. Intricate, wrought-iron front porches are reminiscent of the French Quarter.

The Details
The inn's complex of three buildings (the main house and two carriage houses) offers 16 rooms and three suites, each decorated in the Colonial style with hardwood floors, crown moldings, graceful canopy beds and carved fireplaces. For those feeling trapped in a bygone era, each room comes with TV, phone, whirlpool bath and refrigerator to bring guests back into the 21st century. Other amenities include Continental breakfast, afternoon tea, concierge service and turn-down service.

a fine b+b

by mabstb

weve stayed at several b+b's across the country, and this was one of the better ones. rooms/suites are large and well appointed. very convenient to downtown. ballroom upstairs with tea and cocktails every afternoon. breakfasts are slightly more than continental (you can add on eggs or whatnot for a charge) and delivered to your room, the courtyard (bring bugspray) or the ballroom. helpful and knowledgable staff. the house is old (1730s) so the floors are not insulated well (we could hear our upstairs neighbors walking around). there was a phone system problem while we were there in the middle of the night - not a quiet event, but apologetically resolved the next morning. when we return, we'll stay there again.

  • Pros: location, quality of accomodats, romantic
  • Cons: noisy
