Get it together! – Preface by saying that we are locals and have enjoyed the views and above average bar food many times. Tonite we were "greeted" at the door by a middle aged irish hostess who demanded that each member of our party be present before we be seated. Granted our party included a seven week old baby (easter baptism party), two six year olds, and four grandparents over 80 who happened to be taking their time making the trek from the inadequate parking area and up the wooden stairs. The hostess went on to inform me that her job was not to "sell to me" and that it was not her problem that i was unhappy because I was "not getting what I wanted". She stated that she would be fine with us "moving on to another establishment"- which we did. I pray that ownership steps up and corrects the issues with this once upon a time shem creek landmark. until that happens, I will be fine with a little less quality food but 180% friendly service at Red's . UNBELIEVABLY BAD TONITE AND COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE, Get it together Vick!
Lost it's style – Bourbon shrimp was so strong with bourbon it was horrible. Then we ordered drinks at Happy Hour and the bartender made our shooters with a call brand instead of house and gave us a bill at the end charging us 6.50 a piece instead of the 2.50 advertised.( and he is rude!!!) Local business supports you in the winter and you lost ours!! To many good places to go on Shem Creek!!!
Good time – Came here on a Thursday with my girlfriend. They have a happy hour special from 4-7 and 10-1, of beers for $1.75 and the bartender gave us that special throughout the entire time that we were there even though we were there through 9 p.m. We ate at the bar and the food was good and the staff was friendly. Seemed to draw a crowd primarily in their mid 20's. Preferred this as opposed to Red's.
Not recommended - unless.... – My wife and I had lunch here Saturday 3/10/07. I have this theory about restaurants: If they're perched on the highest cliff, or nestled in the deepest woods, or hanging over a picturesque river, they're likely to not be very good. Situs crowds quality. That's this place. It's in a fairly tacky area of Charleston, on Shem Creek in a tired fortress of a building close by the water with inside-outside seating. It's staffed by kids who may not be of legal age themselves waiting on customers who may not be much older. It's a bar-sandwich scene for couples engaged in the dating dance. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but the customer crowd tends to be easily pleased - beer, burgers, boasting, and all - so the establishment serves them well but not those of us looking for a slightly higher degree of service (I had to go to the kitchen to find our dessert, our waiter had vanished). But we got what we paid for. I wouldn't go back but many others will.
Off the beaten path – Vickery's is an institution in Charleston mainly for its laid back bar scene, friendly staff, and ice cold draft beers. What I never entertained was taking my parents there for dinner, but was pleasantly surprised at their reception. I wanted to take them somewhere reasonable since I was paying and after toying with other stops, I decided on V's. The appetizers were great and the entree's all come with a crisp salad. The sunset over the creek was spectacular and everyone enjoyed dining off the penisula. If you're looking for a place to treat your friends or large family, take them to Shem Creek and share with them what Charlestonian 20 somethings have know for so long. Vickery's...a great neighborhood eatery.
