Incredible Lowcountry Experience.
I had the good fortune to visit Edisto's Old Post Office Restaurant during a visit to Edisto Beach. There are only a few true fine dining experiences on Edisto, and the Old Post Office is up there with the very best.
Our party enjoyed a combination of items on the regular menu as well as on the daily specials board. We absolutely loved the smoked salmon and fried oysters. For the main course, I ordered the Firecracker flounder off the menu. It was an incredibly large portion of perfectly fried fresh flounder. It had a unique, savory taste, with a little more than a hint of spicy-hot goodness.
Another in my party enjoyed a rib-eye steak on the specials menu. It was a very healthy-sized portion cooked to perfection and topped with an incredible mix of mushroom, onions and other goodies that made it a real delight.
We especially enjoyed the grits. Grits tend to be grits, but the Old Post Office has a recipe that makes theirs really stand out.
The wine list was very extensive, and the prices were very reasonable.
The atmosphere and ambiance of The Old Post Office is comfortable and romantic. The staff was very attentive to our party.
very little value for a lot of money. If you want to spend $26 for a $12 meal, this is the place for you. Outside is quaint. Inside is blah. Wait staff is mixed. Food is decent, but way over priced. Portions are laughably small (crap cakes: 4 small bites), even the inexpensive sides (vegetables: expect 5 beans and 2 pieces of carrot, grits: expect 2 tablespoons) Pretending to be gourmet, this restaurant is taking big advantage of being the only game in town.
Wish I had better news about the new OPO. We were raving fans of the former Old Post Office....howerver, the management of the newly re-opened restaurant is less than spectacular. Management and servers were unresponsive to problems of uneven food quality. I hope they get better and I wish we could give them a stellar review....but right now we can't.
