Quintessential Charleston Restaurant. Hominy Grill has it all... great food, great atmosphere, great prices and a friendly staff. HG is off the beaten path which makes it feel more "small town" than tourist attraction like restaurants on Market/King/Broad. The food is an excellent, the banana /pumpkin bread is delicious and the biscuits and gravy was a nice departure from the normal. The coffee was better than you get at Starbucks and had a nice bold, rich flavor. Not normally a grits fan...I ate them without adding a single thing and I didn’t leave a single hominy in the cup! The staff was also friendly and completed the total dining experience. All this for the same/less than you would pay at an IHOP or Cracker Barrel. When I think of Charleston breakfast, Hominy Grill is the first on my list!
Charleston Find. Another restaurant that I have to go back to multiple times to enjoy the variety of choices on the menu. This is a great example of Charleston neighborhood dining.
A Charleston hot-spot.. I have only been here for breakfast but, the food is pretty good. You can choose from eggs to pancakes. Recommended by many locals. Get there early!
Awesome Sunday Brunch. Just ate there this afternoon. Food and service was great. Selection was limited for brunch, yet choices were spectacular! We had the Shrimp and Grits and the "BIG NASTY fried chicken bisket" . The coffee was excellent as well!
Best Shrimp and Grits anywhere!. Amazing shrimp and grits, a true charleston favorite, a little off the beaten path but well worth the drive over. It is the type of place you find yourself again and again. The cornbread is also amazing, as are the biscuits, the experiance as a whole is simply divine!
Not all that, but pretty good.
Reading other reviews on this site and chowhound and roadfood, I thought that eating here would like going to heaven. It was good, but not 'five-star good.'
It is a busy place popular with both locals and tourists. No waiting inside, so we got to wait in the 90 degree steamy Charleston heat. Once inside, it is fairly noisy due to the wood floors and stamped tin ceiling. Our food arrived fairly quickly after our order was taken. The service was very friendly, but could have been better (we were never offered refills on our drinks.)
I had the juevos rancheros (we ate on a Saturday and ordered from the brunch menu.) They were quite tasty. Other folks at my table ordered the eggplant sandwich, smothered eggs and chicken salad sandwich. Everyone thought the food was good.
I would suggest you go, but go at an off-hour to avoid the wait.
Shrimp and grits and buttermilk pie. Great Place, but really noisy on the inside. They have the best shrimp and grits (without gravy) in Charleston. My favorite dessert is the buttermilk pie.
Great Low-Country food experience.. Non-pretentious atmosphere on the edge of downtown Charleston. Server was perky, informed and very helpful. Food excellent, wine list good, service timely. A bit noisy, but a great value.
Yum Yum. Hey Ya'll. OMG the corn bread is lip-smacking good!! Delicious soups and specials! I love this place...yum yum in my tum tum.
My favorite restaurant in Charleston!. I love Hominy! This is the one place I make sure to take guests when they visit. The food is amazing--high class southern food. You MUST try the grits when you go. My favorite is the shrimp and grits. My girlfriends are fans of their double-cut bacon. My guy friends are known to have ordered two dishes each because they can't make up their minds. Everything there is delicious. This is one place not to miss, but be ready for a wait before sitting at a table!
