Editorial Review for Peninsula Grill – by Florrie Byrd

The Scene
A walk through the gas-lit, tree-enshrouded courtyard sets the scene for a wildly romantic evening. Couples get cozy at the tryst-worthy champagne bar, sipping drinks and whispering. In the dining room, antique landscapes hang from velvet-upholstered walls, and chandeliers cast a rosy glow. Gracious, well-informed waiters provide flawless service. The noise level is the only drawback, never dropping below a dull roar.

The Food
Humble Lowcountry dishes get the gourmet treatment here. A salad of lump crab, spinach and fresh tomato perfectly combines creamy and tart; Fried green tomatoes served alongside are a distraction. Oysters Rockefeller are almost too indulgent, oozing velvety Asiago cheese. Seared foie gras begs to be devoured. In addition to steak and lobster, tempting entrees include pecan-cornbread stuffed quail and bourbon-grilled jumbo shrimp. Save room for a mountainous slice of the famed coconut cake. Its six layers, perched elegantly atop a swirl of crème anglaise, put grandma's recipe to shame.

We made reservations for four and when we arrived we were seated right away near the bar. Our server was phenomenal and knew what she was talking about. We didn't know what everything on the menu was so we asked and she didn't act snooty or rude about it. She made recommendations and was spot on every time. The wine list is exceptional and we were very pleased with our selection. I had a peach fizz from the bar. It was one of the best cocktails I've ever been served. Not too sweet, stout or weak. Just perfect. The tuna appetizer was a little small, but the taste was way too good not to try. It was prepared two ways and each was perfect. Our meals were served with perfect timing and each of us enjoyed what we ordered. The chef's special was sword fish and it was cooked just right and the accompanying sauce was also just right. I tried the scallops which were large and moist. The portions are perfect. I like being satisfied without having too much food left over. The atmosphere was great. Not too noisy. It is perfect for friends going out for the night or a romantic evening with a date. I would also suggest trying the coffee after your meal. Like any restaurant of this caliber, the coffee is very fine. I regret that we did not get dessert, we were just way too full at the end of the meal. I highly suggest going to this restaurant whenever you get the chance!

Pros: Great everything

Cons: Nothing

My wife and I live in Houston and traveled to the Charleston recently for a short vacation. We are accustomed to top quality restaurants and the Peninsula definately rates at the top of the food chain. I had scallops which were cooked perfectly and my wife had the fish special of the day and it was also excellent. We stayed in the adjoining hottel (Planters Inn) and also stopped in one night just for desert. The banana pudding was not what my mom used to make (it was much better) and the giant coconut cake was killer. We ordered a Cliff Lede 2005 cabernet and the sommelier came to the table to decant it for us. He was very pleasant and knowledgeable. They keep their red wine at the proper temperature and the prices were very reasonable. We paid $65 for the wine and at the liquor store it is $50 ( a very fair price). Our waiter was Robert and I don't know if we got the best waiter in the restaurant but he definately made us feel welcome and was very attentive. I highly recommend the Peninsula Grill

Pros: Everything that you expect from a great restaurant

Cons: None
